Since the end of lockdown, HVDS has been performing filtration level upgrades at a number of food manufacturing and commercial buildings across the UK. This is in response to the growing demand for virus-free air to keep the workplace environment safe. Coronavirus outbreaks among food factory employees have even led to the temporary closure of some production plants. This has disrupted the supply chain and cost companies money.

HVDS engineers assess the needs of sites on an individual basis. Each site will have a different set of indoor air quality and filtration requirements. Furthermore, we take into account additional safety precautions when carrying out the work. These are all outlined in a COVID-19 protocol, agreed with the customer.
In order to ensure the elimination of all traces of COVID-19 from the air handling system, our engineers fog the air handling units (AHUs) with a market leading solution, before we remove the old, contaminated air filters. The solution we use is hospital grade and completely food safe. It kills 99.99% of all known viruses and bacteria, including Coronavirus. What’s more, it is made from natural plant extracts and minerals, so it is environmentally friendly, non-toxic and alcohol free.
Engineers then remove all filters at each filtration stage of the AHU and deep clean the systems using a food safe cleaning agent.
Air Filter Upgrade
The type of filters we recommend as an upgrade on your existing filters will depend on a number of factors, including the capacity of your fan. H13 HEPA filters are the most effective against airborne contamination. They guarantee to trap 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 microns in diameter or larger. Read more about HEPA filters here. However, not all AHU fans are capable of creating the extra airflow necessary to push air through HEPA filters. If this is the case, secondary filters can be increased to F9/ISO 16890 ePM1 80% (High Care Production requirement). Following installation of the finer grade filters, we fog the systems again to ensure eradication of any remaining virus and bacteria particles.

Before commencement and after completion of the work, surfaces of the AHU can be swabbed and tested for contamination. This helps eradicate any remaining contaminant particles.
HVDS is an Environment Agency registered waste carrier and will always dispose of your old filters responsibly. Disposal of filters is agreed with you prior to carrying out the work.
Finally, it is important to establish a more frequent filter change schedule, change filters to a set schedule rather than pressure drop and check filter frames at intervals to ensure an airtight seal. In addition to your air filter upgrade, we recommend implementing a more rigorous system cleaning schedule. Please also note that areas now falling under a higher risk category, as a result of the pandemic, are subject to more frequent ventilation cleaning.
